I would like to share on a very current subject today that is not so new called "Cancel culture" in light of the life of the prophet Jeremiah. Cancel culture is as old as humanity. God called Jeremiah with a challenge saying;
‘Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them (the nation of Israel) whatever I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them.Today I have made you a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land – against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land. They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the Lord.
(Jeremiah 1:17-19)
'God says to Jeremiah, expect to be canceled. But never mind it, I will defend you for I AM with you.
If I could give cancel culture a true term, it would be "Rejection of biblical Truth." While some today may think cancel culture is a new and "progressive" trend that promtes good, it actually is as old as humanity and only serves to foster human agenda while attempting to quench God's sovereign authority and silence every voice that challenges that agenda. Cancel culture is Satan's tool to in subtle and cunning ways promote that which dishonors God while silencing biblical truth that is able to save the human soul from hell. The nation of Israel which most of the Bible really is about practiced cancel culture.
In the book of Jeremiah, cancel culture was the prophets enemy. Jeremiah is born at a time when the kings of Israel have led the nation down a path of idol worship and wickedness. They still want to have the protection of God, in fact they think they have the protection of God, that special treatment from God because of God's good promises given through Moses. The only issue is that they have forgotten their God. They worshiped idols, practiced all kind of wickedness. Some went to the temple to worship God, but did it on their own terms, "progressive" terms and felt justified doing it. The good promises Moses declared where predicated on the choices they made, Moses had explained them clearly.
Moses said to Israel;
If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands that I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God: You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock – the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven. (Deuteronomy 28:1-7)
Moses also said to Israel;
However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you: You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country. (Deuteronomy 28:15-16
When Jeremiah shows up on the scene, Israel has for a long time now ignored the later part of Moses's warnings while expecting to enjoy the former good promises.
God tasks Jeremiah to speak to the nation, to challenge Israel and remind them how far they have fallen and to return to the Lord their God, but they want nothing of it. By this time Israel has their favorite prophets who tell them what they want to hear. They would be called progressive prophets today. These prophets keep reminding the people of God's favour while ignoring their wicked ways and their idolatry. They talk of God's love, even claim it, while ignoring God's standards.
When Jeremiah cautions the people with warnings given to him by God, they hate it. The man is canceled. They say he is speaking words of hate and doesn't deserve to live. Sounds like cancel culture today doesn't it
Here's one biblical account of an encounter with cancel culture for Jeremiah;
Early in the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came from the Lord: This is what the Lord says: Stand in the courtyard of the Lord’s house and speak to all the people of the towns of Judah who come to worship in the house of the Lord. Tell them everything I command you; do not omit a word. Perhaps they will listen and each will turn from their evil ways. Then I will relent and not inflict on them the disaster I was planning because of the evil they have done. Say to them, “This is what the Lord says: if you do not listen to me and follow my law, which I have set before you, and if you do not listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I have sent to you again and again (though you have not listened), then I will make this house like Shiloh and this city a curse among all the nations of the earth.” ’ The priests, the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speak these words in the house of the Lord. But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the Lord had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said, ‘You must die! Why do you prophesy in the Lord’s name that this house will be like Shiloh and this city will be desolate and deserted?’ And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the house of the Lord. (Jeremiah 26:1-9)
Cancel culture is as old as humanity. The Bible says there is nothing new under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 1:9)
God is calling His church in America today to stand up against culture. To challenge the so called progressive ideology that promotes idolatry in the name of perverted love while undermining the power and authority of God who alone is love, and is worthy of worship and devotion.
God says to His church like He said to Jeremiah;
‘Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them whatever I command you.
